PMMS, AIMS, ICC down NCRAA foes

Three teams made their title campaigns felt at the start of the 29th NCRAA men’s basketball tournament Friday, March 10, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. Philippine Merchant Marine School (PMMS) squeaked past PATTS-College of Aeronautics, 85-84, even as Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) survived Saint Dominic College of Asia’s (SDCA) late rally, 80-77, to jumpstart their bids in the league, which is returning from a four-year hiatus. Immaculada Concepcion College (ICC) also barged into the winning column with an 84-56 thrashing of Bestlink Colleges of the Philippines (BCP) behind the efforts of Ian Torres and Roger Ondoa, who fired 17 and 14 points, respectively. Vince Salonga, meanwhile, drained the winning jumper with three seconds left for PMMS, which also got a big lift from Joaquin Octavo, Michael Sosing and Warren Sienes. Octavo paced PMMS throughout with a double-double effort of 16 points and 11 rebounds, Sosing chipped in 14 points and nine boards, and Sienes contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. AIMS, for its part, squandered a double-digit lead after Nico Elazegui and Shan Azurin conspired for an 11-0 blast for SDCA to close the gap at 72-all, 3:25 left. But Alexis Himan, Jericho Peralta and Jeff Adao fired six straight points to regain the 78-72 upperhand as AIMS protected its lead from then on. Danny Datwin led AIMS with 19 points, while Himan and Peralta added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
