PCG: Retrieval operation for Cessna plane crash victims in Isabela challenging
DIVILACAN, Isabela – The Philippine Coast Guard sees the retrieval operation for the bodies of the six Cessna plane crash victims in this province as a challenge due to the terrain of the crash site in Barangay Ditarum here.
“Matatarik na bundok at napakahirap tawiring ilog (We are facing steep mountains and rivers that are difficult to cross),” the PCG said.
According to the Coast Guard District Northeastern Luzon, the missing aircraft was discovered by personnel from the Coast Guard Sub-Station Maconacon, Coast Guard K9 Force, Coast Guard Special Operations Unit-Northeastern Luzon, and Rescue 715 Maconacon in a mountainous area in Barangay Ditarum after 44 days of search and rescue operation on Thursday, March 9.
The retrieval operation would take at least three days, the PCG said.
Responders are hoping for good weather to enable them to bring the remains to Cauayan City for processing by the Scene-of-the-Crime Operatives.
"Basta maayos ang panahon at walang ibang aberya (We are hoping for good weather and no setbacks),” the PCG said.
The Cessna C206 light plane with tail number RPC 1174 and six persons onboard went missing on Jan. 24 after departing the Cauayan City Airport for Maconacon, Isabela at 2:15 p.m. It was expected to arrive at 2:45 p.m.
Its last transmission with air traffic controllers was four minutes later at 2:19 p.m. in Naguilian, Isabela.
No survivors were found. The Army identified the fatalities as pilot Capt. Eleazar Mark Joven and passengers Tommy Manday, Val Kamatoy, Mark Eiron Seguerra, Xam Seguerra, and Josefa Perla España.
Responders said parts of the plane were scattered in the crash site and clothes of the victims were hanging on trees. One of them was seen without a head.
The victims’ relatives have been informed, Constante Foronda, head of the Incident Management Team-Isabela, said.
A report said the weather was clear when the plane left the airport but the wind around the Sierra Madre mountain was “turbulent.”
