PH to hold post as SEAMEC president --- DepEd

The Philippines, led by the Department of Education (DepEd), will hold the post of President of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council this year.

The country, through DepEd, will commence its presidency during the opening ceremony of the 52nd SEAMEO Council Conference on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

At this year’s conference, Singapore --- which assumed the presidency of the SEAMEO Council (SEAMEC) for a two-year term or from 2021 to 2022 --- will hand over the leadership to the Philippines.

SEAMEC is the SEAMEO’s highest policy-making body.

DepEd is currently under the leadership of Vice President Sara Duterte who serves as the Education Secretary in a concurrent capacity.

The SEAMEO Council Conference is a biennial meeting where Education Ministers from 11 SEAMEO member countries which include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam discuss educational cooperation in the Southeast Asian region.

With the theme “Transformation through Learning Exchange: Building Resilient Systems as a Region,” this year’s SEAMEO Council Conference will be held until Feb. 10.

During the three-day conference, high-level officials and Education Ministers from member countries are expected to attend.

The conference, DepEd explained, will also be a “collaborative platform for education leaders in Southeast Asia to discuss and plan the development of relevant policies related to quality education in the region.”

In 2021-2022, former Education Secretary Leonor Briones served as the Vice President of SEAMEC.
