PCG: Ship captain saved after suffering from stroke at sea

A ship captain was rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after he suffered from mild stroke while sailing in Surigao City on Sunday, Feb. 5

Virgelio Palado, 59, was steering MV Pearl Orient at the city’s anchorage area when he suddenly had a mild stroke, said Lieutenant Senior Grade Romeo Dax Calamaya, station commander of Coast Guard Surigao del Norte.

MV Pearl Orient was underway from Davao City to Batangas City when the incident occurred.

Calamaya then deployed a deployable response group and Coast Guard Medical-Northeastern Mindanao onboard Fast Patrol Boat 151 to give initial medical assistance to Palado.

After his vital signs were checked, Palado was given a portable oxygen by the Coast Guard responders to improve his respiratory situation before being taken to a hospital for further medical attention.

Meanwhile, 16 individuals onboard motorboat MB Kent Paul were also rescued by the PCG when the vessel encountered engine trouble in the vicinity waters of General Santos City on Sunday.

The Coast Guard District Southern Mindanao said the boat was navigating from Balut Island to General Santos City when it was hit by big waves and strong winds, causing its engine to fail.

Fortunately, a distress call was made by the boat to Coast Guard Sub-Station Calumpang which resulted in the rescue of the boat passengers off the Fish Port Complex in Barangay Tambler.
