The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Saturday, Feb. 4, that it has completed the road concreting works in Carles, Iloilo that provides access to the tourist spots in Gigantes Island in the Western Visayas Region.
“As both local and foreign tourists flock the well-known “Isla de Gigantes” in Carles, these road upgrades are necessary in order to enable a safer and more accessible transport system going around the island,” DPWH Region 6 Director Nerie D. Bueno said.
The P255-million multi-year road project traversing barangays Langub, Piagao, and Asluman was implemented by the DPWH Regional Office 6 and Iloilo 3rd District Engineering Office (DEO), under the department’s convergence program with the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Bueno noted that the scope of works of the completed project include the construction of an 8.86-kilometer, two-lane, portland concrete cement pavement (PCCP) road with 1.5-meter shoulder on both sides, with provision for slope protection construction.
She stressed that the improved road condition will attract more tourists, traders and investors which will generate more jobs and create livelihood opportunities that will improve the economic condition in the island.
The DPWH has also proposed additional funding in 2023 for the street lights to ensure public safety during night time. (Chito A. Chavez)
