871 aftershocks recorded so far after 'very strong' Davao de Oro quake

State seismologists on Saturday, Feb. 4, said they have already recorded 871 aftershocks following the “very strong” 6.0-magnitude quake that struck Davao de Oro earlier this week.

Of the 871 aftershocks ranging from magnitudes 1.5 to 3.6, a total of 77 were plotted while only 2 were felt. Previously, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) explained that “recorded” quakes were logged by at least one station, while “plotted” quakes were recorded by three or more.

The seismic event that triggered these aftershocks occurred at around 6:44 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Its epicenter was traced two kilometers southwest of Compostela, Davao de Oro with a depth of 17 km.

Phivolcs, on Saturday afternoon issued an updated list of areas where the quake was recorded.

At Intensity VI, it was “very strong” in Compostela, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan, and New Bataan, Davao de Oro; Asuncion, Carmen, Kapalong, New Corella, Island Garden City of Samal, San Isidro, Santo Tomas, and City of Tagum, Davao del Norte.

Strong tremors were felt in Laak, Mabini, Maco, Maragusan, and Pantukan, Davao de Oro; Braulio E. Dujali, Davao del Norte; Baganga, Banaybanay, Boston, Cateel, and Lupon, Davao Oriental; and Santa Josefa, Agusan del Sur at Intensity V.

Moderately strong shaking was felt in City of Panabo, Davao del Norte; Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; Caraga, Governor Generoso, Manay, City of Mati, San Isidro, and Tarragona, Davao Oriental; City of Butuan; City of Bayugan, Bunawan, La Paz, Prosperidad, and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur; Bayabas, and City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur at Intensity IV.
