CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – All villages in this first class highly urbanized city will soon be enjoying free internet connectivity.
City Mayor Rolando Uy said the city government is targeting to offer free internet connectivity in the first 50 barangays either within this month or next month.
“Sa akong gitinguha nga matag covered court sa barangay adunay WiFi (I want every covered court in the barangay to have WiFi),” Uy said in his Facebook live program on Friday, Feb. 3.

Uy made the announcement following a recent visit of some of the top Mindanao officials of the PLDT Inc. – one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the country – on Thursday, February 2.
According to Uy, the city decided to start the implementation of its plan in the first 50 barangays since not all barangays here have cellular sites from Smart – a wireless communications and digital services subsidiary of PLDT Inc.
Uy said a total of 36 Smart cellular cites will be added in the city in line with the project to have every village covered with free internet Wifi.
Cagayan de Oro City is the capital of Misamis Oriental province in Northern Mindanao region. It also serves as the regional center and business hub of Northern Mindanao.
Uy revealed that the first barangay to be installed with free internet connectivity will be the barangay Carmen, one of the biggest and populated barangays in Cagayan de Oro which has 80 barangays.
Apart from communications and security, Uy believed students stand to benefit well from the planned free wifi connectivity in the city.
