Senators file reso commending Alex Eala for historic US Open win

Senators Sonny Angara and Risa Hontiveros have each filed a resolution commending Alexandra Eala for winning and dominating the Junior Girls’ Singles Final of the 2022 US Open held in New York City.

In filing Senate Resolution 201, Angara hailed Eala for making history for the Philippines after winning the title for the first time in the US Open.

Eala also became the first Filipino to both compete and win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) main draw match when she won over Argentina’s Paula Ornaechea in August 2021.

In filing Senate Resolution No. 202, Hontiveros commended Eala for sharing her victory and use it as a platform to advance the future of Philippine tennis.

“(She) is in the company of other great Filipinas who made history in the past two years who produced in such a short time,” she said, referring to Hidilyn Diaz, who won the maiden gold Olympic medal, and Yuka Saso, the first ever Filipino US Women’s Open Champions in golf.

“These women at the forefront in leading us to new heights, as a nation and as a people, have achieved these remarkable feats despite pushbacks and obstacles, from lack of financial support to political controversy,” Hontiveros added.

“History makers and glass-ceiling breakers like Alexandra Eala, Hidilyn Diaz, Maria Ressa, the PH Malditas, Yuka Saso, and numerous other Filipinas who persevere despite the odds and use their platforms to inspire and to generate greater good should serve as a reminder of every Filipina’s resilience in the face of adversity, perseverance despite uncertainty, and strength against all odds,” she stressed.

Other senators who recently lauded Eala’s major feat over the weekend were Senators Pia Cayetano and Nancy Binay.
