The 24-member Senate paid tribute to young tennis star Alexandra "Alex" Maniego Eala who made history in Philippine sports by becoming the country’s first tennis player to win a juniors singles Grand Slam event in New York City.
This, after the Senate during its plenary session presided by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri adopted Senate Resolution (SR) 199 paying tribute to ‘’another athlete who brought tremendous pride to our country".
‘’We honor a lady who made history in Philippine sports by becoming the country’s first tennis player to win a juniors singles Grand Slam event,’’ according to Senator Christopher ‘’Bong’’ Go, chairman of the Senate Sports Committee.
‘’Alexandra 'Alex' Eala, a 17-year-old tennis player, made sporting history by becoming the first Filipina, Filipino, to win a juniors singles Grand Slam match after defeating her opponent to win the US Open Girls singles title in New York City,’’ he added.
Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva sponsored the resolution, which was supported by 23 other senators.
Senators Nancy Binay, Bong Go, Ramon ‘Bong’’ Revilla Jr., Jose ‘’Jinggoy’’ Estrada, Pia Cayetano and Juan Edgardo ‘’Sonny’’ Angara stood up to co-sponsor the resolution.
‘’The pride of the Philippines currently owns three junior Grand Slam titles after winning the girls doubles titles at the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 French Open,’’ Go said.
‘’Mr. President, Alex's victory is a victory for the entire country and serves as motivation for many young Filipinos interested in participating in national sports, particularly tennis. Despite balancing training and school, Alex demonstrated that success is a result of hard work, perseverance, and passion.,’’ he added.
Villanueva said that ‘’the website, Fresherslive.com, recently released its 2021 report of the top 10 sports in the Philippines. The list did not include Tennis, yet, a young Filipina athlete in the person of Alex Eala is smashing her way into the world of Tennis. ‘

‘’I am hoping that her accomplishment would encourage and inspire many young Filipino athletes to excel in the sport they are in and give them confidence and faith in the government’s commitment to improving our sporting programs and initiatives,’’ he said.
‘’Our recent sporting achievements in previous years are just the beginning of the restoration of our country’s sporting greatness, and I have no doubt that more Filipino athletes will soon rule the world stage,’’ he added.
‘’May we continue to triumph in every competition, in whatever field and wherever they are held in the world,’’ he stressed.
