OCTA observes spike in Covid-19 cases in Pangasinan

The province of Pangasinan recorded a spike in Covid-19 cases, as shown by the average of new infections over the past week, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

“Pangasinan, just like Rizal, is having a spike in new Covid-19 cases. The seven-day average of new cases in Pangasinan increased from 36 (as of September 6) to 69 (as of September 13), for a one week growth rate of 92 percent. The one-week growth rate was previously at 8 percent,” David said in an update shared on Twitter.

On Sept. 12, OCTA also reported that Rizal province had seen a spike in new cases over the past week.

“The seven-day average of new Covid-19 cases in the province of Rizal had a one-week growth rate of 47 percent, from 84 as of August 29 to September 4, to 124 as of September 5 to 11,” David then said.

In Pangasinan, the reproduction number, which refers to the average number of secondary infections by each infected individual, has increased to 1.40 as of Sept. 10, from 1.10 as of Sept. 3.

The positivity rate, or the number of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who were tested for Covid-19, also rose from 6.9 percent on Sept. 10 to 10.9 percent on Sept. 12.

Although Pangasinan’s average daily attack rate or ADAR increased to 2.18 per 100,000 population, David said that this is still considered “low.”

Healthcare utilization and ICU occupancy for Covid-19 cases in the province also remained low at 30 percent and 17 percent, respectively.

“Pangasinan remained at low risk but the rise in cases must be monitored,” David said.
