House hails Eala's feat: 'One of the greatest in PH sports history'

The House of Representatives on Wednesday night, Sept. 14 adopted a resolution hailing the historic win of Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala in the juniors' Grand Slam girls singles in the 2022 US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The 17-year-old was the first-ever Filipino to achieve this feat.

House Resolution (HR) No. 362 was filed by Speaker and Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez, House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City 2nd district Rep. Manuel Jose "Mannix" Dalipe, House Minority Leader and 4Ps party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan, Senior Deputy Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos, Tingog Party-list Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre.

“Alex’s feat underscores the kind of dizzying heights the country has achieved in tennis and her exemplary performance, which is one of the greatest in Philippine sports history, deserves utmost commendation and distinction for the honor and glory it brought to the country,” the resolution said.

“Resolved by the House of Representatives, to congratulate and commend Alexandra 'Alex' Maniego Eala for being the first Filipino to win the Junior Grand Slam Girls Singles Title in the 2022 US Open Tennis," it continued.

The measure was consolidated with 15 other resolutions, namely HR Nos. 352, 353, 355, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361, 363, 366, 369, 370, 371, 372, 373, 375, and 377.

The resolution recounted the journey of Eala in the world of tennis before her great win in the recent US Open.

Eala was ranked 10th seed in the tournament and climbed up the ladder by defeating higher ranked players, including 8th seed Taylah Preston from Australia and 9th seed Victoria Mboko from Canada.

She went on to beat in an intense match 2nd seed and World Junior No.3 Lucie Havlickova of the Czech Republic during the finals.

“Alex, who spent the whole year playing in the professional level, was a masterclass in her return to juniors as she did not drop a single set in six matches,” the resolution said.

“An ambassador of the Philippines in tennis and eager to promote the sport among her countrymen, an emotional Alex dedicated her victory to the Filipino people during the trophy presentation with these remarkable words: ‘Buong puso ko itong ipinaglaban, hindi lang para sa sarili ko kundi para makatulong din ako sa kinabukasan ng Philippine tennis. So hindi lang ‘to panalo ko, panalo natin ‘to (I fought for this with my entire heart, not just for myself but also for the future of Philippine tennis. So this victory isn't mine alone, this is our victory).’”

A copy of the resolution will be sent to Eala.
