Carmelo Anthony says PH hosting of FIBA part of country's basketball growth

NBA star Carmelo Anthony said on Friday, Feb. 24, that the Philippines’ co-hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup is a huge opportunity to strengthen the foundation of the country’s basketball growth.
The former USA team player, who was officially named as the third FIBA global ambassador, was present during Gilas Pilipinas’ 107-96 win over Lebanon at the Philippine Arena later in the day.
“I think the Philippines could be proud that they are hosting, or one of the hosts of the 2023 FIBA,” said Anthony at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Filipinos certainly put on a show in front of the former Lakers forward, firing 17 three-pointers against the Lebanese to tie with Kazakhstan, Australia and Japan for most triples made in a World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers game.
“I think from that standpoint, that says a lot. That’s also gonna propel the Philippines down the line when it comes to actually continuing the development of the game of basketball,” added Anthony.
The Philippines will be co-hosting the basketball event along with Japan and Indonesia come the final group phase in August.
As he steps into the new role along with former NBA players Luis Scola and Pau Gasol, Anthony is looking forward to creating more opportunities to develop young talents and ultimately see them represent their country on the international stage.
“I think listening. I’d rather listen to the fans and see what we can do from my side. And help and expand the game In the visibility of the game, of basketball, as honored as I am to be there, I’m still learning from a global stage, from a global game. What it needs, and why it needs any. Give it back to these kids and allow them to feel like they hope and they have an opportunity go out there and hopefully be playing in front of their home crowd here in the Philippines when it comes to basketball,” he concluded.
