Police have secured the middleman who contracted six people to do a hit job on veteran broadcast journalist Percival Mabasa.
Police Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the middleman is awaiting a decision for a case related to illegal drugs.
This means that middleman is not an inmate of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) as only convicted felons are transferred to the detention facility under the Bureau of Corrections of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
"We have already coordinated with those in charge of that particular detention cell for the protection and security," said Sermonia in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel.
"The reason why we really need to secure the middleman is because the middleman will be a great help in establishing who is the mastermind," he added.
The family of Mabasa, also known as Percy Lapid, earlier urged the police to secure the middleman whose name was revealed by alleged gunman Joel Escorial after his surrender.
Journalist Roy Mabasa, brother of the slain journalist, said it is important that the middleman is secured since he serves as the link to the mastermind who ordered the killing of Mabasa.
Escorial also told Mabasa of the identity of the middleman and his name was also included in the affidavit that was prepared after his surrender.
Escorial also disclosed that he and his five companions who planned, conducted surveillance and executed the assassination were paid P550,000. Escorial received P140,000 that was deposited to his bank account.
Escorial earlier said he was forced to surrender after his image was made public through a CCTV footage and after the middleman contacted him again and told him that he had to go to a safe house. For Escorial, going to a safehouse may mean that he would be killed.
It is not clear if the middleman agreed to cooperate with the police like Escorial but Sermonia said they would exert all efforts for the identification.
"He can choose to stay silent but then again we will not stop, we will further improve our investigation," said Sermonia.
