PNP says there were 2 middlemen in Percy Lapid killing

Following the death of an alleged middleman in the killing of hard-hitting broadcast journalist Percival Mabasa, the Philippine National Police (PNP) disclosed on Thursday night, Oct. 20, that there were actually two people who served as intermediaries in the hit job contract.

Police Brig. Gen. Kirby John Kraft, director of the Southern Police District and commander of the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Percy Lapid, said the two middlemen were actually included in the six people mentioned by the alleged gunman Joel Escorial when he surrendered on Monday, Oct. 17.

"There actually two middlemen. One is under the custody of the BJMP (Bureau of Jail Management and Penology) and the other one was in the Bilibid," said Kraft.

It was the middleman detained at the New Bilibid Prisons who died as announced by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla who said the former died at around 3 p.m. on Oct. 18, or a day after the surrender of Escorial.

Escorial earlier revealed that he decided to surrender after he was told by one of the middlemen that he had to be transferred to a safehouse after an image of him was made public and a P6.5 million reward was offered for any information that could lead to his identity and arrest.

Remulla said the middleman was subjected to an autopsy and for his part, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos said that they will wait for the result in order to determine if there was a foul play.

"We are waiting for the autopsy result because if we there was a foul play, we would hold those behind it accountable," said Abalos.

He said he and the rest of the PNP officials working on the case were outraged of what happened to the middleman.

A question of security

Police were expected to coordinate with the Bureau of Corrections after Escorial spilled the beans as to the other suspects behind the killing of Mabasa.

Asked by reporters why the middleman died when he was supposed to be secured, Kraft said: "The person was in NBP."

PNP officer-in-charge Lt Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, in an interview over ANC, said that a middleman detained in another detention facility was already secured.

Assurance

Abalos, for his part, assured that Escorial will be safe.

"I just want to clarify, the gunman (Escorial) is under police custody. So he is really safe," said Abalos.
