Aldin Ayo glad to pick up first win but rues Converge's defensive lapses
A perfectionist that he is, Aldin Ayo was glad to get the monkey off his back after picking up his first win as PBA head coach right on his first try but he wasn’t exactly pleased with how his team played, especially on the defensive end.

While the FiberXers got it going offensively with their fast paced run-and-gun style, Ayo’s wards struggled defensively as Lester Prosper just threw his weight around to finish with 43 big points – 26 of which coming in the first half along with a monster 25 rebounds
“To be honest, I was disappointed. I mean we cannot sustain our defense. We have lots of lapses on individual defense. We don't want this kind of game – a high scoring game. We have lots of lapses on the defensive end,” said Ayo in his very first post-game presser as Converge head coach.
“‘Yung offense naman, it will come especially with our pace. There will be a lot of possessions, there will be a lot of three-point shots but our priority is our defense,” he stressed.
Good thing, the FiberXers found their groove defensively in the third frame where they limited the Dyip to just 17 points after exploding for 62 after the first two quarters. Import Quincy Miller, Maverick Ahanmisi led the balanced scoring that allowed Converge to pull away for good in the second half.
Miller dropped 38 points and 16 rebounds to lead the way for Converge which shot a whopping 101 attempts – 43 of which coming from beyond the arc.
“That’s our game but we have to start making stops first. It's really hard to run or set the plays if you cannot make stops. For us, everything will start by making stops (and) make sure we defend,” he added.
While already getting used to his job handling professional players instead of the collegiate stars, Ayo admitted that he still felt some nerves in his first game especially during a stretch where Terrafirma seemed to be unstoppable with Prosper in tow.
“Medyo nag sink in na rin pero naramdaman ko yun una sa practices kasi alam mo yung mga players, alam mo na na mga pros na. Everything started dun sa practices pero itong actual na medyo adjusted na pero iba pa rin syempre kapag andun na yung kalaban mo
“Lahat ng first medyo nakakakaba especially nung di kami nakakashoot tapos nakikita ko gaano kagaling yung mga kalaban. Ilang puntos sir Prosper, 26 in the first half, and Joshua Munozon and even yung buzzer beater ni JP (Calvo) magagaling eh. We just have to always bring our best games.”
