Taylor Swift named IFPI's Global Recording Artist of the Year; BTS at No. 2

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), representing the recording industry worldwide, announced Taylor Swift as the winner of its 2022 Global Recording Artist of the Year Award. 

This is her third time to bag the award after achieving the feat in 2019 and 2014. According to IFPI, the release of Swift’s “Midnights” album was a key for her to grab the No. 1 spot.

The Global Recording Artist of the Year Award is based on an artist’s or group’s worldwide performance across digital and physical music formats during the year, from streams to vinyl, and covers their entire body of work.

“It is a great pleasure to award the IFPI Global Recording Artist Award to Taylor Swift for an unprecedented third time in the chart’s ten-year history. Taylor is a truly magnificent international star, who continues to grow and evolve as an artist whilst maintaining an incredibly strong connection with her fans around the world,” said Frances Moore, IFPI chief Executive. 

The top 10 IFPI Global Recording Artists 2022 (IFPI

BTS, winner of the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year award for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2020, placed second on the chart in 2022. This is BTS’ fifth time to place in the IFPI Global Artist Chart top 10. They placed No. 2 in 2018 and No. 7 in 2019. 

Two other K-pop acts made it to the top 10. Seventeen placed No. 6 after bagging No. 9 in 2021. Stray Kids charted at No. 7, their first time to enter the top 10. 

“It is exciting to see this year’s Global Recording Artist Chart reflect the increasingly diverse spectrum of music available to music fans today, with superstars from Latin America, Taiwan and South Korea as well as the US, UK and Canada represented. Record companies continue to work diligently in every corner of the globe to find and develop global stars and build their successful careers for the long-term,” added Moore. 

The IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award and Top 20 chart is the only ranking to accurately measure consumption across all formats (including streaming formats, digital and physical album and singles sales) and all countries, according to IFPI. It is weighted based on the relative value of each method of consumption.
