Martika Ramirez Escobar’s psychological comedy-drama movie took home the ‘World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit’ at the Sundance Film Festival 2022
After having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2022, Martika Ramirez Escobar's psychological comedy-drama movie “Leonor Will Never Die” is coming to streaming platform Netflix this March.

After eight years, the film's production was finally completed during the pandemic. Its plot centers on Leonor Reyes, a retired action film writer and director in the ‘80s, who enters the world of her unfinished screenplay after experiencing a coma when a television landed on her head. Leading its cast is stage veteran Sheila Francisco as Leonor, alongside actors Rocky Salumbides, Bong Cabrera, Anthony Falcon, Rea Molina, Tami Monsod, Allan Bautista, and Dido de la Paz.
In January 2022, the film was awarded with the “World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit” at the Sundance Film Festival 2022. During her speech, Martika expressed her gratitude to those who believed in her film after years of its production.
“Hello, Sundance jury. Thank you for recognizing our team’s labor of love. This is special coming from a film set that felt like one giant friendship film,” Escobar said during her virtual speech. “I’d like to say thanks to the entire Sundance team for treating us like family. I’d like to thank everyone who had showed their love and support for our film. You are proof that finally after eight years, our film is alive.”
Apart from its Sundance recognition, “Leonor Will Never Die” also took home awards from various international film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
“Leonor Will Never Die” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting March 17.
