Catholic bishop calls on faithful to observe 'no meat Friday'

As the 40-day Lenten season begins, Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay, Palawan Bishop Broderick Pabillo called on the faithful to observe and support the “No Meat Friday” campaign of the Catholic Church.

The chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference Philippines—Episcopal Office on Stewardship said the observance of the No Meat Friday campaign may be considered as a personal sacrifice during Lent.

“We can skip eating meat on Fridays as part of our penitence and personal sacrifice in remembrance of the hardships that the Lord offered for our salvation,” said Bishop Pabillo over Radio Veritas.

“Skipping meat on Fridays can also help make us healthier as well boost the Church’s campaign on climate change,” the Church leader said.

The prelate cited studies done on animal agriculture that showed the effect of greenhouse gases on the continuous rise in temperature around the world.

“I am urging everyone to observe the No Meat Friday, to consume more fruits and vegetables for us to be healthier as well as to help preserve our environment. Let us skip meat on Fridays not only during Lent but on a regular basis,” he said.

Roman Catholics traditionally abstain from meat during the Holy Week as part of their penitence and personal sacrifice.
