Police probing if driver of car in Danao City collision fell asleep
CEBU CITY -- The driver of the car that rammed into a truck may have fallen asleep that caused the fatal accident in Danao City, northern Cebu on Tuesday, Feb. 21, police said.
Master Sgt. Ronald Gomez said they are not discounting the possibility that Erwin Bacalso Mondejar fell asleep while driving, causing his sedan to swerve to the opposite lane and collide with the oncoming truck.
Mondejar, his wife Imelda and daughter Erin were killed in the accident, which happened on a national highway in Barangay Dunggoan, Danao.
The couple’s son, Imer, was the only survivor in the tragic accident.
“It was possible that the driver fell asleep on the wheel but we are investigating further to determine what really happened,” said Gomez, investigator of the Danao City police.
Gomez said the driver of the wing van, Nolin Batobalonos, narrated that he honked the truck’s horn repeatedly after seeing the sedan heading in their direction.
“There was also a resident who heard a vehicle blowing its horn non-stop,” said Gomez.
“What the truck driver said was possible and when the other driver woke up, it was already too late and he failed to avoid the truck. It was not actually a head-on collision. The sedan hit the front side of the truck before it rammed into a mango tree,” said Gomez.
Batobalonos and his co-worker, Roldan Dino Guerra, were headed to Bantayan Island to deliver chicken feeds that they hauled from a warehouse in Consolacion town.
“According to the driver, the truck was traveling at slow speed because their cargoes were heavy,” said Gomez.
Gomez said they could not also review the footage found inside the sedan because it was totally damaged.
Gomez said investigators are coordinating with Erwin’s cousin.
“We will continue to reach out to them and other members of the family. But for now, we have to give them more time because they are still grieving,” Gomez said.
The Mondejars are from Macrohon town, southern Leyte. They arrived in Cebu on Tuesday dawn and came from an adventure park in Danao before the accident happened.
The couple’s son who survived the accident is recuperating in a hospital in Cebu City.
