Aussie defense minister condoles with families of fatalities in crashed Cessna plane
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles on Wednesday, Feb. 22, expressed condolences to the families of those who died after a Cessna airplane crashed in Albay recently.

Marles visited the country and held a bilateral meeting with Department of National Defense Officer-in-Charge (DND-OIC) Senior Undersecretary Carlito “Charlie” Galvez Jr. at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City to discuss the strengthening of the defense cooperation between the Philippines and Australia.
In a press conference after their meeting, Marles mentioned the crashing of a Cessna RPC340 near a forested area in the boundary of Guinobatan and Calamig towns last Feb. 18.
“If I may Charlie, can I just express my condolences to the Australian and Filipino families of those who died in the very tragic plane accident that occurred in the last few days,” Marles said.
Onboard the downed plane were four individuals: Capt. Rufino Crisostomo Jr., pilot; Joel Martin, crew member; and two Australian nationals identified as Simon Chipperfield and Kathi Santanan. The status of the passengers and plane crew are unknown as of this posting while search and rescue (SAR) operations are ongoing.
However, two Philippine Army (PA) soldiers who were involved in the SAR operations to find the victims were killed in an ambush by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels while they were buying supplies for the team.
“This has been a very difficult event and we are really grateful to the efforts that Filipino servicemen have undertaken in responding to this. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two dear lives in those efforts,” Marles said.
“We want to express our gratitude for all that has been done in the aftermath of that accident but also to extend our condolences to those who tragically loss of their lives,” he added.
