CEBU CITY – Police should not be complacent and must be alert at all times when responding to alarms.
The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) issued this reminder after a policeman and a member of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology were fatally shot while responding to an alarm in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
The fatality was identified as Patrolman Rhulin Mar Abrasaldo who was assigned to the 705th Mobile Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion in Bayawan City and jail officer Edwin Laag, 55.
Investigation said Abrasaldo and Laag responded to an alarm at past 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. When he arrived in the area, two men on board a motorcycle suddenly opened fire and hit the fatalities.
A 56-year-old woman, Winchita Villuz, was wounded in the attack.
“We are looking at all possible angles. Nothing is definite, everything is being checked upon, motives, perpetrators, the backgrounds of the victim so we can come up with a comprehensive investigation report,” said Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, spokesperson of PRO-7 director Brig. Gen. Jerry Bearis.
Bearis was saddened by the incident and ordered the continuing conduct of security training for police officers in the region, Pelare said.
“His order was for the policemen to always be on alert when responding to alarms to avoid similar incidents from happening again,” Pelare said.
