Magnitude 4.8 quake strikes off the coast of Quezon province — Phivolcs

An earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Quezon province on Monday morning, Feb. 20, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its bulletin.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 83 kilometers northeast of Jomalig, Quezon around 11:09 a.m.

It was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Polillo and Patnanungan in Quezon; Intensity II (slightly felt) in Jomalig, Burdeos and Guinayangan in Quezon, Quezon City, Makati City, Muntinlupa City, and Malolos City; and Intenisty I (scarcely perceptible) in Mauban in Quezon.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs’ instruments recorded the tremor at Intensity IV in Polillo, Quezon; Intensity II in Dingalan and Baler, Aurora; and Intensity I in Malolos City and Plaridel in Bulacan, Mercedes in Camarines Norte, Gapan City and Gabaldon in Nueva Ecija, and Infanta, Alabat and Guinayangan in Quezon.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
