Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may persist in the eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas in the next 24 hours due to the combined effects of the low pressure area (LPA) and shear line, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday, Feb. 20.

PAGASA estimated the location of the LPA 190 kilometers (km) north of Legazpi City, Albay or 210 km east of Infanta, Quezon, as of 3 a.m.

It is still not ruling out the possibility of the LPA developing into a tropical depression.

But whether it intensifies or not, PAGASA said the LPA, along with the shear line, will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Bicol Region, mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, and Northern Samar in the next 24 hours.

Shear line is the boundary between cold air from the northeast monsoon and warm air from the easterlies.

Moreover, rains due to the northeast monsoon or “amihan” may affect Ilocos Norte, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of the Cagayan Valley.

PAGASA warned against possible flooding or landslides, particularly in areas that are highly vulnerable to these hazards.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the LPA and localized thunderstorms may affect Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Mindanao, and the rest of Visayas.

The rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy weather with light amihan rains.

The public is also warned against possible flooding or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
