Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Feb. 17 issued a stern warning against scammers who spread text messages about “unclaimed” cash aid to target vulnerable sectors, such as senior citizens.

“We will make sure to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law so don’t make the mistake of getting caught,” Gatchalian told scammers following a report by a concerned citizen that there are text messages circulating among mobile phone users regarding the alleged unclaimed relief allowance for senior citizens and retired business owners.

Gatchalian reiterated that there is no such relief allowance given by the DSWD to the elderly and retired individuals.

However, he said, the DSWD implements a social pension program for indigent senior citizens and other financial assistance for individuals in crisis.

The assistance is extended through the Crisis Intervention Unit of the DSWD at the central office and in all field offices across the country.

Gatchalian said the DSWD has mechanisms in place to identify scammers and prevent any incident of scam and fraud among its clients.

He also appealed to the public not to use the DSWD to deceive senior citizens, pointing out that such practice is “at worst you take advantage of the weakness of individuals.”

Moreover, Gatchalian reminded the public to be more vigilant and responsible when contacting unknown individuals on the phone.

“This is our reminder to the public not to believe those offering their services pretending to be from the DSWD,” he said.

Gatchalian advised the public to report any suspicious messages they receive to the nearest DSWD office or any concerned government agency, noting that it is also the duty of all citizens to verify information from the authorities.
