Baguio, Metro Manila record coldest day yet this 'amihan' season

Residents and tourists in Baguio City and Metro Manila woke up on Friday, Feb. 17, to the coldest morning so far this 2022-2023 northeast monsoon or “amihan” season, as the air temperature dropped to 10.2 degrees Celsius (℃) and 20.2℃, respectively.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded Baguio City’s lowest temperature reading around 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, the lowest temperature reading in Metro Manila was recorded at the Science Garden monitoring station in Quezon City around 6 am.

PAGASA attributed the cold weather in Baguio City and Metro Manila to the northeast monsoon prevailing in Luzon and Visayas.

Other PAGASA stations also recorded low air temperatures on Friday.

Based on the PAGASA’s monitoring, the top 10 stations that recorded the lowest air temperature throughout the day were:

Baguio City (10.2℃)

Basco, Batanes (16.0℃)

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (17.2℃)

Malaybalay, Bukidnon (17.6°C)

Tanay, Rizal (18.2℃)

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (18.2℃)

Abucay, Bataan (18.3°C)

Casiguran, Aurora (18.8°C)

Aparri, Cagayan (19.5°C)

Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (19.9°C)

According to the weather bureau, surface air temperatures are expected to be “near to slightly cooler than average” in most parts of the country, except for some areas that may experience slightly warmer than average temperatures, this February.

The forecast temperature ranges are: 9.1°C to 28.1°C in the mountainous areas of Luzon, 12.1°C to 36.3°C over the rest of Luzon, 18.8°C to 35.8°C in Visayas, 12.6°C to 33.8°C in the mountainous areas of Mindanao,18.2°C to 37.1°C over rest of Mindanao, and 18.7°C to 35.0°C for Metro Manila.
