NYFW fall-winter 2023: From glamorous displays to weirdly beautiful collections
By John Legaspi
The world’s gaze turned to New York earlier this month as designers and brands showcased their fashion forecast for fall-winter 2023. Throughout the run of the latest season of New York Fashion Week (NYFW), the runways were dominated by pieces mirroring nature’s beauty, beastly encounters, and fantasy worlds straight out of the pages of iconic literary creations. Below are some of our favorite collections presented during NYFW fall-winter 2023.

Christian Siriano
Opening NYFW was American designer Christian Siriano as he presented his collection dubbed “Audrey Hepburn’s Rose Garden.” As the title implied, the fall runway show was inspired by the ‘90s TV show “Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn.” What went down his botanical runway were dresses that explored new proportions and textures--- a sheer dress decorated with 3D floral appliques, a sunny yellow ball gown, and suits playing with him and her aesthetics through sharp tailoring mixed with flounce elements.

Rodarte
Rodarte's show was all about drama with pieces serving dark and whimsical fantasy. The brand's muses are beautifully wicked as they walk down the runway wearing gothic, fairytale-inspired looks. Metallic fringed gowns, shimmering wings, velvet and lace capes, and silk bonnets with molded flowers definitely took everyone to a grim wonderland.

Prabal Gurung
The butterfly is a perennial source of inspiration for many designers. The latest to showcase a stylish take on the winged creature was Prabal Gurung. Butterfly wing prints were present on his asymmetrical pieces and knits. He also played with subtlety through chiffon, silks, and satin embellished with sequins and fringe.

Collina Strada
Mutant beasts graced the runway show of Collina Strada. Highlighted during its "Please Don’t Eat My Friends” show were contemporary outfits such as plaid workwear pants, silk frocks, and animal-printed pieces all in Y2K style, echoing our connection with nature.

Coach
Coach's latest showcase was definitely a collection for the cool kids. Oversized plush outerwear, jackets made of scrap materials, and ruffled dress brought to the runway that distinct New York City urban vibe.

Melke
A nod to the Roald Dahl classic "James and the Giant Peach," Melke’s debut collection at NYFW was, literally, "full of peaches and pests." Emoji-like peaches and embroidered bugs added a touch of humor to the collection. While its use of environmentally friendly Italian wool made it a juicy collection Gen Z fashion savants will love.

Thom Browne
Witnessing Thom Browne's newest collection was like going through the pages of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved work, "The Little Prince." Models walked around a massive paper plane in the middle of the runway. The pilot was present during the show wearing patchworked jumpsuit over the brand's "earth" dress. Decked in an oversized tweed jacket and a gilded tartan dress was the prince. Also seen during the show was the snake-elephant drawing in the form of a bag.
