UP to review, address student accommodation capacity in campuses after student perished in QC fire

Following a fire incident that killed a University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) student on Feb. 9, new UP President Angelo A. Jimenez formed a task force to "review and take immediate and long-term actions" on students' accommodations within all UP campuses.

Social Work major Alexis N. Aquilino, 17, and her 40-year-old mother were found dead on the second floor of their two-story house on J. Francisco, Brgy. Krus Na Ligas, Quezon City.

The University, in a statement on Feb. 11, emphasized the importance of providing its students with more living spaces on its campuses, especially since face-to-face classes are about to resume.

These will provide them with "peer-to-peer support" and can also direct them to assistance and well-being services if needed, UP said.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the student's mother was showing signs of depression and allegedly purposely burned down the house.

It reached the first alarm around 2:29 a.m. and was put out at 2:58 a.m.
