Ookla Speedtest Global Index report showed an increase in fixed broadband download speed for the Philippines in January. The country’s fixed broadband median speed improved to 88.13Mbps from the 87.13Mbps registered the month before.
In a statement released Tuesday, Feb. 14, the report said that the latest download speed represents an improvement of 26.39 percent since the Marcos administration began in July 2022. Mobile median speed slightly dipped as the country yielded a download speed of 24.59Mbps from 25.12Mbps the month before.
The latest download speed represents an improvement of 9.05 percent since the Marcos administration began in July 2022. National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez said, “The NTC shall constantly work for the steady improvement of internet speed as part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s thrust to advance the country’s digital connectivity.” Lopez added, “We look forward to Starlink’s commercial availability this year to further improve internet speeds in the country.”
Streamlining and speeding up the issuance of LGU permits in July 2020 generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to December 2022. Improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity.
