CAVITE – Thirty-two couples tied the knot at a mass garden wedding in Cavite City on Monday, Feb. 13, with the brides carrying their "priceless" bouquets made of vegetables, notably onions.
Instead of the usual flowers, the brides walked down the aisle and carried with pride their unique bouquets made of cauliflower, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and a pricey ingredient these days – onions.
“Times are hard, and we want to be practical. Flowers are nice to look at, but that’s about it,” Mayor Denver Chua told the Manila Bulletin in a text message.
Each couple were also given a sack of rice as a wedding gift.
“Sa mahal ng bilihin ngayon (with soaring prices these days), I thought they’d appreciate vegetables and rice better. Para pag-uwi, may kanin na sila, may ulam pa (when they go home, they have rice and viand).”
In a Facebook post, Chua said the local government unit sponsored a free wedding reception for the newlyweds after the ceremony.
The mayor stood as principal sponsor to the couples, along with other local officials, including Cavite 1st District Rep. Jolo Revilla.
