The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Saturday, Dec. 9, that the cremated remains of two Filipinos who were executed in China for drug trafficking are already in the Philippines.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said that the cremains arrived on Friday, Dec. 8.
“Yes, and delivered to the families,” he said when asked about the arrival of the Filipinos’ cremains from China.
The DFA official furthered that the cremains were brought home by the officials of the Philippine Consulate.
“They were turned over to the families yesterday (one family) and today (the second),” De Vega said without giving further details as the families have requested for privacy.
Last Dec. 6, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza assured that the Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou was working to bring the remains back home.
The two Filipinos were executed on Nov. 24 in China.
They were first apprehended by Chinese authorities in 2016 for possession of illegal drugs while en route to another country.
The Philippine government tried appealing to commute their death sentences to life imprisonment but to no avail.
There are at least two other Filipinos on death row in China but their cases are still under appeal.
