Candon City in Ilocos Sur has reaped the social and economic impact of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) P9.8-million road improvement after the agency fixed a section of Candon-Salcedo-Del Pilar Road.

DPWH Region I Director Ronnel M. Tan said the completed 1.12-kilometer concrete road project involved asphalt overlay with a 50-millimeter thickness for better durability and to improve residents' and tourists' commuting experiences.

“Beyond mere road improvement, this project is a multifaceted approach that coincidently boosts cultural and commercial exchange. By providing better access to local businesses, the improved road delivers substantial economic benefits and opportunities to the communities,” Tan said.

According to DPWH, the road is also essential for the efficient supply of agricultural products, including rice, corn, tobacco, and other products to the area's marketplaces and distribution facilities.

Aside from benefitting local folk with their daily activities, the DPWH said tourists can now have easier access to numerous destinations such as Ban-aw Resort, Bakaan Farm and Resort, Palacapac Eco Park, Salcedo Adventure Park, Bago Resort, Sibol Hotspring & Seven Bowl Falls, Tirad Pass National Park, Gen. Gregorio del Pilar Shrine, Mt. Peg-an Camping site, Mt. Tirad Pass Summit, and the Tirad Pass Museum and Handicraft Center.

The road rehabilitation project was carried out by the DPWH Ilocos Sur 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO) and funded through the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA). (Trixee Rosel)
