CEBU CITY – The Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) recorded more cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the region in 2022 than in 2021.
The DOH-7 reported that 1,012 individuals in Central Visayas were infected with HIV that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome last year.
Klark Kevin Trucio, Nurse III of the DOH-7 Communicable Diseases Section, said that only 881 HIV cases were recorded the year before.
Trucio added that of the 1,012 cases in 2022, 579 cases were caused by sex between males as mode of transmission.
Persons who inject drugs were the second most common mode of transmission.
Because of these figures, Region 7 is among the top four regions in the country with high cases of people living with HIV.
With the increasing number of HIV cases, the DOH-7 has intensified its awareness campaign activities.
Trucio said the help of the community will have a huge impact in the campaign to bring down the number of HIV cases in the region.
