Hunger strike day 2: Celiz, Badoy in 'normal' condition after House check-up

SMNI program anchors Jeffrey "Ka Eric" Celiz and Lorraine Badoy underwent medical check-up at the House of Representatives wherein they both turned out to be in "normal" condition.

House Secretary General Reginald Velasco released this information Thursday, Dec. 7, or a day after Celiz and Badoy announced that they would go on a hungry strike in protest of their being held in the custody of the House of Representatives in Batasan, Quezon City.

Based on the information, Celiz was found to be "normal with a cold", while Badoy was "normal".

Two nurses conducted the medical check-up at 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

Celiz and Badoy are co-anchors of the daily SMNI program "Laban Kasama Ang Bayan". They went to the House last Tuesday, Dec. 5 to act as resource persons in a hearing of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises.

When solons in the hearing felt that Celiz and Badoy were refusing to tell the truth or were withholding information from them, they moved to cite them in contempt. The citation came with the penalty of detention at the House, which is based on House rules.

On Wednesday, the SMNI anchors bared that they were going on a hunger strike.

"I and Dr. Lorraine Badoy are now entering the second day of our 'hunger strike/ hunger protest' as we continue to resist and oppose our serious illegal detention at the House of Representatives/Batasan Complex, Celiz said in a statement Thursday morning.

He share that he and Badoy have been transferred to the South Facility Building, beside the south gate of Batasan Complex.

Celiz insisted that their detention was illegal.

In a statement Wednesday, Badoy said that the events of the Dec. 5 hearing "was a direct offshoot of the infiltration of the CPP NPA NDF inside Congress and to also hold those in power accountable to the Filipino people".

Based on motions made by House members, the two are expected to remain in detention until the committee report of the legislative franchises panel gets approved in plenary.

Congress will go on a holiday break starting Dec. 16. They won't convene again until Jan 22.
