Spirit of Christmas: DepEd leads nationwide tree-planting initiative

As a "Christmas gift" to all Filipino children and future generations, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, Dec. 6, led the simultaneous conduct of a nationwide tree-planting activity.

Dubbed “236,000 Trees – A Christmas Gift for the Children,” the project was participated in by public schools and field offices nationwide.

DepEd Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Michael Wesley T. Poa, National Capital Region (NCR) Director Jocelyn Andaya, and Pasig Representative Roman Romulo led the main program conducted in Pasig Central Elementary School.

Officials, teachers, and learners of DepEd likewise joined the program in their respective areas. DepEd said the said project was participated by approximately 47,678 public schools.

As stated in DepEd Memorandum No. 69, series of 2023, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte noted that the initiative aims to promote environmental preservation and instill environmental responsibility among Filipino children.

DepEd noted the tree planting activity is a “gift from the Department to ensure a clean and green environment for Filipino children and future generations.”

Before the conduct of the program, DepEd, the Office of the Vice President, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the program titled Pagbabago: A Million Trees Campaign.

To mark the nationwide tree-planting activity, DepEd instructed all public schools to shift to asynchronous mode of learning on Dec. 6.
