A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Cagayan at 2:19 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the tremor was located at seven kilometers northeast of Dalupiri Island, Cagayan at a shallow depth of 10 km.
Phivolcs' instruments recorded Intensity II (slightly felt) in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Candon, Ilocos Sur; and Aparri, Cagayan.
It also recorded Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Peñablanca and Gonzaga, Cagayan and City of Laoag, Ilocos Norte.
The earthquake was tectonic which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs said there were no expecting damages but warned the public that aftershocks are possible.
