Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay in Palawan Bishop Broderick Pabillo has expressed support to a Christmas caravan in the West Philippine Sea.
Bishop Pabillo said the three-day civilian led initiative which begins on Sunday, Dec. 10, is “a laudable way to show support to our military officers and our fisherfolk.
The Christmas convoy coincides with the observance of International Human Rights Day.
“The Christmas caravan is a peaceful way to support our military officers and our fisherfolks as they defend our territorial waters,” the Church leader said in a CBCP News post.
“The convoy will bring gifts and good cheers to them as a way of showing support for them. It is a peaceful activity within our own territorial waters,” he added.
The National Security Council (NSC) and the National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea earlier authorized the caravan organized by the Atin Ito Coalition, and gave the group permission to pass through the general vicinity of Ayungin Shoal.
Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan said Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels will accompany the Christmas convoy in its journey.
The PCG commandant said the convoy will include at least 40 civilian vessels and around 100 participants, including youth leaders and fishermen.
The group initially planned to board BRP Sierra Madre, but the NSC did not give them permission and instead will just pass by Ayungin Shoal and travel to Lawak and Patag islands.
Bishop Pabillo expressed his gratitude to those who supported the initiative “by sending them their gifts. May this activity bring good cheers to all,” he said.
