Presence of Marawi bomber in Davao City denied

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Information Office (CIO) called as false information social media messages claiming that the suspect in the bombing of the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City on Sunday, December 3, was spotted here.

These claims circulated on Facebook on Monday, December 4, and one of them was posted by Lyle and shared by three others.

Facebook user Lyle posted screenshots of the assessment report made by the Philippine National Police (PNP) that identified the suspect.

Screenshots of the assessment report include another screenshot of a Facebook message not contained in the police report that someone spotted the bomber at the City Hall of Davao.

Another Facebook user claimed the suspect was spotted somewhere else here.

“There is no truth to the message circulating on social media alleging that the bombing suspect was seen in Davao City. We ask everyone to refrain from sharing unverified information such as this,” the CIO said in a statement.

Police identified on Monday the suspect behind the bombing but has not located his whereabouts.

They identified the suspect as a certain Khadafi Mimbesa, a resident of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, with aliases Engineer, Kadi, and Akoya, and a bomb expert and sub-leader of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group operating in Lanao del Sur.

The police and military have not considered the suspect’s location but authorities have raised alert status in borders and cities for security and identification of possible suspects.

The Davao City government assured that the security sector is on top of the situation here. The city government, on Tuesday, December 5, conducted a Culture of Security Simulation Exercise to strengthen the “See Something, Say Something,” campaign in this city.

The Davao CIO encouraged the people in this city to continually practice the Culture of Security by cooperating with security checks and reporting suspicious individuals or activities, including unattended luggage.

Meanwhile, the city government, through the Peace 911 and Task Force (TF) Davao, with the MSU Alumni Association Davao Chapter, welcomed 16 students of the MSU from this city who arrived on Tuesday morning at the City Hall grounds.

A post in the City Government of Davao’s official Facebook page said that they arranged for the transportation of these students who requested to come home from Marawi. Davao City will provide psychosocial services to the students.
