The Violence Against Women (VAW) is a "grave concern" that leaves victim-survivors trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, guilt, and shame, the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) said.

In its statement issued Dec. 3, PCW said the causes of the occurrences of that violence include misogyny, patriarchy, macho culture, and gender inequality.

"Violence Against Women is a grave concern. Its effects encompass a wide spectrum, spanning physical, emotional, psychological, and socio-economic dimensions," said PCW.

VAW makes women suffer from "serious injuries" including bruises, broken bones, migraines, and chronic health conditions while also holding women back from applying for jobs and having financial independence according to PCW.

Moreover, PCW said VAW ruins the the security and soundness in families as it also affects the children "who may become trapped in a cycle" by possibly being involved in these cases whether they will be the perpetrators or victims in their future relationships.

PCW urgently amplified its calls to end VAW by being united even in the light of the "gravity" and "complexity" of the situation.

"The urgency of this call has never been more apparent, because each delay can mean another girl being raped by someone close to her or a complete stranger, another woman being trafficked into prostitution, another woman being sexualized on social media, another young woman being forced into marriage, another child witnessing VAW in the home, another woman living in fear, wondering if she will ever see the light of a new day," said PCW.

PCW called on the public to wipe out gender norms and stereotypes that can harm women as equality in gender is the "key" towards a VAW-free environment according to PCW.

"Once we eradicate the notions that women are subservient to men, women are weak, women are second class citizens, women are mere objects or commodities, the path towards eliminating VAW becomes clearer," it said.

PCW also advised the public not to tolerate VAW and not ignore the condition of VAW victim-survivors. It also urged the public to reject the "normalization" of violence, to condemn victim-blaming and to not side with the perpetrators.

"All of us must demand action and accountability," said PCW. "Action by relevant authorities must be prompt, appropriate, adequate, and gender-sensitive," it added.
