  • An interesting side note is that the notable actors in the movie chose to waive their talent fees or at least did not make it mandatory for the producer to pay them.

"Haligi" is an inspirational movie depicting the struggles of four men who are also "pillars" of their families, all struggling to survive. It is a production by CEBSI Films or the Christian Era Broadcasting Service International, the film production unit of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

The pool of actors chosen to participate in the film also belongs to the INC faithful. They include Victor Neri, Richard Quan, Christopher Roxas, and  Dex Castro, who play the fathers bonded together by friendship and their mutual desire to provide for their loved ones amid the dark background of Manila's slums. The four are torn between doing the right thing and supporting their families against all odds.

An interesting side note is that the notable actors in the movie chose to waive their talent fees or at least did not make it mandatory for the producer to pay them.

Richard shared that " the project is beyond being a professional actor. It's beyond personal, it's more of a spiritual matter for me. I have my own reasons why. I am uncomfortable sharing it but  I have my own deep reason for doing this, and those in my church know what it is. Regarding CEBSI, I prefer to do it for free."

Victor, who converted to INC in 2016 and is now based in Bohol province, reasoned that "the projects that we do, especially those related to CEBSI, will always be based on the teachings of the word of God. When we do something for the church, hindi yan literal na nagsasamba-sambahan lang. We do other tasks like joining an outreach program. Sharing our talent in acting is also part of our work kasi istasyon ng iglesia yan eh."

Christopher, who is married to actress Gladys Reyes, revealed: " We dont ask or demand , kasi it's our responsibility  It's our duty to give back to the church. We don't ask for a budget pero sila naman ang nagbibigay kasi alam nila binabayaran ang aming talento, pero hindi kami nagpe-presyo."

Dex, who has done some indie movies, remarked: "Kung mayroon ibibigay, maraming salamat. If none, that's fine too. We are just doing our work, and we don't expect anything."

The director of "Haligi" is Nestor Malgapo Jr. whose films include the internationally-acclaimed "Kapayapan sa Gitna ng Digmaan," "Kahoy," "Best Man," "Rendebu," and "Esperanza" which starred Ruru Madrid and Arielle Roces.

Malgapo said that the offerings of CEBSI Films are not for commercial release. This is the reason why they also don't join the Metro Manila Film Festival. He clarified, however, that "Haligi" does not "preach about belonging to INC.

"There is no mention at all about Iglesia ni Cristo in the movie. We are just trying to impart that at all times and in all moments in our lives, we can always depend on God. We just need to talk to Him and pray," the director said.

The red carpet premiere of "Haligi" was recently patronized by  INC members from different "locals" who filled at least two SM City San Lazaro cinemas.

Malgapo explained that they don't require the INC members to watch the movie. They just take it upon themselves to support the film so that they can share its message with others.
