I give you praise, Father

Jesus praises the heavenly Father for hiding the mysteries of his Kingdom from the wise and the clever and revealing them to the childlike: simple folks who do not show off their importance. Jesus imitates God on this matter. As the Son, he alone truly and completely knows God. He does not reveal the mysteries of God to the wise like the scribes and the Pharisees who are experts on the Torah. Rather, he teaches God’s will to his disciples who are mostly uneducated people. They are the “childlike” because they do not carry weight in society.

Jesus then opens the eyes of the “little ones” to privileges they now enjoy. The things that Jesus teaches and shows them are what the prophets and kings of old could only dream about. These were looking from afar, waiting for God’s definite intervention for men’s salvation. This is happening right now before the very eyes of the disciples. In Jesus, they have the Messiah in their midst. We may get disappointed because we look for things that are beyond our reach, not realizing that what we have already enriches us. In what ways do you feel blessed?

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
