The Department of National Defense (DND) encouraged Filipinos to emulate the patriotism of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal and stand together in protecting the country's independence from forces that threaten to suppress it.

DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. made the call in time for the commemoration of the 127th death anniversary of Rizal on Saturday, Dec. 30.

"Dr. Jose Rizal was a visionary and patriot who chose to fight for our nation's freedom through words and ideals. His courage and sacrifice inspired others to join the fight for our independence," Teodoro said.

"Today, may every Filipino be reminded of our shared duty and responsibility to uphold our sovereignty and sovereign rights as citizens of this nation. Let us embody our national hero's unwavering love for the Philippines and remain united in protecting our hard-earned peace and independence," he added.

At the Rizal Park in Manila, the Philippine Army (PA) joined the public in commemorating the anniversary of Rizal's martyrdom in a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony.

The PA Security and Escort Battalion rendered ceremonial honors led by President and Commander-in-Chief Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Among the attendees were Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, General Romeo Brawner Jr.; Philippine Army (PA) Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Roy Galido;  Philippine Air Force (PAF) Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Stephen Parreño; Philippine Navy (PN) Flag Officer in Command, Vice Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr.; Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan; and Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Police Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr.

On Dec. 30, 1896, Rizal was executed by firing squad at Luneta Park (formerly known as Bagumbayan) during the Spanish colonial period.

Prior to this, he was jailed after being accused by the Spanish colonizers of treason and rebellion during the Philippine revolution, owing to his anti-Spanish writings "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo".

In 1902, the Philippine Commission enacted a law declaring December 30 of every year as Rizal Day in honor of the national hero's martyrdom.
