PNP forces in Mindanao on highest security alert, Metro Manila cops on heightened alert
Police forces in the entire Mindanao were placed on Sunday, Dec. 3, under highest security alert status following the bombing inside the Marawi City campus of the Mindanao State University that left at least four people dead.
On the other hand, all police units under the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) were ordered to be on heightened alert status, according to Police Col. Jean Fajardo, spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“The safety and well-being of the community is our top priority. In response to the incident, we have elevated the security level of our Police Regional Offices (PROs) in Mindanao to “full alert status.” This decision is part of our strategy to enhance readiness and response capabilities in order to address any potential threats or untoward incidents,” said Fajardo.
“At the same time, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is on heightened alert to reinforce vigilance and immediate response capabilities in the capital region. Our objective is to maintain a state of readiness and ensure swift response to any emerging situations,” she added.
Placing Metro Manila forces under heightened alert, according to Fajardo, aims to instill confidence and demonstrate our commitment to maintaining peace and order.
The bomb attack occurred at around 7 a.m. while mass was being celebrated at the Dimaporo Gymnasium. Aside from four fatalities, police said a number of people also suffered injuries as a result of the bombing.
The PNP Health Service has been directed to provide immediate assistance to the wounded victims, ensuring they receive prompt and efficient medical attention. Our thoughts are with the victims, and we are committed to their well-being and recovery.
Police are yet to determine the motive and the persons or groups involved, as well as the type of bomb used, as part of the investigation.
“Recognizing the need for specialized support, we have deployed augmentation teams consisting of Special Action Force (SAF) units, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, and K9 units in Marawi City,” said Fajardo.
“These teams are actively conducting paneling activities in areas of convergence to strengthen security measures and detect potential threats,” the official added.
Casualty update
Based on the latest data, a total of four people died as a result of the bombing.
On the other hand, Fajardo said 45 others were injured wherein five of them are in critical condition as a result of the explosion.
"Forty others suffered slight injury as a result of the stampede," said Fajardo.
Security measures
Fajardo said they are now intensifying efforts through the deployment of patrols and checkpoints in strategic locations, adding that the increased presence serves as a deterrent and reinforces security measures.
“On the intelligence front, our units are intensifying efforts to monitor and gather crucial information that will aid in the prevention and investigation of incidents, as well as the identification of potential threats,” said Fajardo.
Police Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Peralta, PNP deputy chief for Operations, said they are now implementing security measures both to prevent the repeat of the incidents and in running after those involved.
Part of the security measures being eyed is possible implementation of gun ban in Marawi City and other areas.
Peralta said there are now CCTVs in the blast site but he said police investigators were already ordered to check on the CCTVs in nearby establishments and to review any footage that they may obtain.
Acorda in Marawi
Fajardo said PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. immediately proceeded to Mindanao to oversee the situation on the ground.
She said Acorda will coordinate response efforts and provide guidance to our dedicated personnel.
“The PNP remains steadfast in our duty to protect and serve. We urge the cooperation and vigilance of the community as we work together to address these challenges,” said Fajardo.
