PAGASA sees slim chance of tropical cyclone formation this week

There is a slim chance that a tropical cyclone may develop inside the country’s area of responsibility during the first week of December, a weather specialist of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday morning, Dec. 3.

Weather specialist Obet Badrina said in its live weather update that the PAGASA has not monitored a low pressure area that could develop into a tropical cyclone in the next few days.

However, he said three weather systems—the shearline, northeast monsoon, and the easterlies—could bring rain showers to some parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

Badrina said the shearline, a weather system formed by the convergence of cold northeasterly winds and warm easterly winds, may bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to Cagayan and Isabela.

Cloudy and rainy weather may also prevail over Batanes and Babuyan Islands due to the northeast monsoon, or “amihan.”

Badrina issued a warning to residents of extreme Northern Luzon to exercise caution, as landslides and flash floods may occur, especially if there is moderate to heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Quirino, and Nueva Vizcaya may have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light amihan rains.

The easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, may also cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of the country.
