Magnitude 6.6 aftershock jolts Surigao del Sur — Phivolcs

A 6.6 magnitude offshore earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur on Sunday evening, Dec.3, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 6:35 p.m., was an aftershock of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The magnitude 6.6 tremor had its epicenter 69 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and occurred at a shallow depth of 1 kilometer beneath the epicenter.

The aftershock was initially measured by Phivolcs at 6.0-magnitude, but this was later revised to 6.6-magnitude.

It was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; and Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Claver, Surigao del Norte; and Bislig City and Cantilan in Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, it was “weak” at Intensity III in Abuyog, Leyte; San Francisco, Southern Leyte; Talakag, Bukidnon; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Digos City and Malalag in Davao del Sur; Davao City; Glan and Malungon in Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; Butuan City; and Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, and “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Dulag, Javier, Julita, La Paz, and Palo in Leyte; Anahawan, Hinundayan, Liloan, Saint Bernard, San Juan, and Silago in Southern Leyte; Cabanglasan, Impasug-ong, Kalilangan, Libona, Pangantucan, and San Fernando in Bukidnon; Balingasag, Balingoan, Gingoog City, Jasaan, Magsaysay, Medina, and Salay in Misamis Oriental; Bansalan and Magsaysay in Davao del Sur; Kidapawan City, M'lang, and Magpet in Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani; Koronadal City and Tampakan in South Cotabato; General Santos City; and Cotabato City.

It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Malitbog, Southern Leyte; Damulog, Dangcagan, Don Carlos, Kadingilan, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, and Maramag in Bukidnon; Initao, Misamis Oriental; Cagayan de Oro City; Polomolok and Tantangan in South Cotabato; Isulan, Kalamansig, and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat.

At least 11 major aftershocks have been recorded since Saturday evening’s magnitude 7.4 earthquake.
