The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) recognized Michelle Dee, Miss Universe Philippines 2023, for her achievements and for proudly embracing her Chinese heritage while contributing to the progress of the Philippines.
"We take immense pride in celebrating the accomplishments of Michelle, who is the granddaughter of our Federation's former Vice President and the late Chinabank Chairman Dee K. Chiong. Another past Vice President of our Federation was also her granduncle, the late civic leader Dee Hong Lue," said FFCCCII President Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro in his speech in Binondo, Manila, last Dec. 28.
Michelle's late granduncle, pre-war Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce President and 1920 China Bank founder Dee C. Chua, as well as her paternal great-great-granduncle, the 19th-century Philippine lumber industry pioneer entrepreneur and civic leader Dy Han Kia, were also known for their philanthropy.
"Philanthropy is deeply rooted in the Confucian tradition of Chinese culture. With a lineage steeped in civic causes, it is no wonder that Michelle, a unique beauty queen, possesses both a philanthropic heart and an idealistic commitment to her civic causes," Pedro said.
Pedro added: "Our message to Michelle is to remain humble despite your success and achievements and to remember to share your blessings to help others."
FFCCCII Vice President Jeffrey Ng also lauded Michelle for her accomplishments.
"In her role as Miss Universe Philippines, Ms. Dee has not only exemplified grace and poise but has also served as a commendable ambassador, representing our nation with distinction on the global stage," Ng said.
Michelle, daughter of former Miss International Melanie Marquez, finished in the Top 10 of the 2023 Miss Universe Competition in El Salvador last Nov. 18. After her stint in Miss Universe, she will focus on show business.
"Additionally, we commend her entrepreneurial spirit, artistic talents, and the values she embodies," Ng added.
In accepting the recognition, Michelle said: "If there's one thing that I can say about the Dee family is that for whatever we've done, and this is consistent for all the Dees, whatever we do, we really aim to serve. We really give back to whatever we can to make sure that the Philippines becomes a better place in our small and big endeavors."
Michelle was accompanied by GMA Network, Inc. Vice President Angel Javier-Cruz, during her visit to the FFCCCII building in Manila.
