‘GomBurZa’ a must-watch historical film, says CBCP President

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David urged Filipinos to watch the historical biographical film “GomBurZa,” citing its importance in understanding Filipino identity and appreciating the sacrifices of national heroes.

Gomburza is the story of three Filipino priests, Mariano Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were executed during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines.

The film stars Dante Rivero as Padre Gomez, Cedrick Juan as Padre Burgos, and Enchong Dee as Padre Zamora.

In a statement released by CBCP on Thursday, Dec. 28, Bishop David outlined the reasons why “GomBurZa” is a must-watch film in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Well-researched

David emphasized that the film will bring back the audience to the “first spark of patriotism” that shaped the Filipino identity.

He highlighted how the film beautifully portrays the coalescence of various ethnic groups, including Tagalogs, Kapampangans, Ilocanos, Cebuanos, and more, into a unified nation in the late 1800s.

Produced by JesCom, directed by a World-Class Talent

The fact that “GomBurZa” is produced by the Jesuit Communications Foundation (JesCom) is a reason alone to “anticipate its quality,” according to him.

The CBCP head also praised the film’s director, Joses Lorenzo “Pepe” Diokno, who is a recipient of the MMFF’s Best Director award, and acknowledged him as a “world-class talent.”

A “Class A” film production

David pointed out “GomBurZa” as a “class A” production that excels in every aspect —acting, directing, script, research, cinematography, sound, and more.

Its success at the 49th Metro Manila Film Festival, where it secured awards for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award, speaks itself about its quality.

‘The essence of being true Filipino’

“GomBurZa” is more than just a historical drama; it’s a journey into the heart of Filipino identity, according to him.

The film explores themes of patriotism, justice, and faith --- which is why David believed it could inspire Filipinos to uphold the values fought for by the three priests.

He added that the film would make everyone “appreciate what it truly means to be a Filipino,” understanding the country’s rich history and spirit.
