Abalos seeks hospital readiness for New Year's revelry casualties

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur’’ Abalos Jr. visited Friday, Dec. 29, the Ospital ng Tondo in Manila and Mandaluyong City Medical Center to ensure maximum preparation for any eventuality ahead of the New Year’s celebration.
In coordination with the Metro Manila Center for Health and Development, Abalos emphasized the urgency of spreading safety awareness as part of the region’s “Iwas Paputok Hospital Rounds and Monitoring Activity" program.
Abalos, together with Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-National Capital Region (NCR) Assistant Director Senior Supt. Rodrigo Reyes and Manila District Fire Marshal Senior Supt. Christine Doctor-Cula, made the hospital rounds as the New year’s revelry nears.
At the same time, Abalos called on all local government units (LGUs) to enact ordinances that ban the use of firecrackers and fireworks displays.
Instead, Abalos has pushed for the supervised fireworks display of the LGUs and other lawful common areas where the public can watch the traditional New Year’s revelry.
Abalos asserted that his call can help decrease fireworks-related accidents and untoward incidents during the holiday season.
He also prodded the LGUs to strictly enforce their respective ordinances pertaining to the ban on firecracker use to celebrate the coming New Year.
In an earlier statement, Abalos said his call is to “ensure safety of their communities, and lessen if not totally eliminate pyrotechnics-related injuries prior to and during New Year’s Eve celebrations.’’
Based on the DILG data, there were at least 1,210 LGUs that have already approved an ordinance banning the use of harmful firecrackers in their respective localities.
Abalos likewise commended the 35 LGUs that have complied with his recent call to pass ordinances on the same, saying that this will ensure a safe and injury-free celebrations for their constituents.
To attain their target of safe and injury-free festivities, Abalos emphasized that the LGUs must see to it that the provisions of the said ordinances are implemented down to the grassroots level.
According to DILG, there are 1,210 LGUs that already implemented firecracker ordinances including 94 in Region 1; 84 in Region 2; 56 in Cordillera Administrative Region; and 108 in Region 3.
There were also 17 LGUs in National Capital Region that implemented firecracker ordinances; 126 in Calabarzon; 67 in Mimaropa; 63 in Region 5; 102 in Region 6; 91 in Region 7; 127 in Region 8; 66 in Region 9; 86 in Region 10; 23 in Region 11; 37 in Region 12; and 63 in Region 13.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the list of prohibited firecrackers include Five Star, Pla-Pla, Piccolo, Goodbye Philippines, Goodbye Bading, Giant Bawang, Watusi, Atomic Triangle, Judas’ Belt, Super Yolanda, Super Lolo, and Coke-in-Can among others.
