Taiwan donates 2,000 MT of rice to poor, calamity victims in PH

The Taiwanese government has donated 2,000 metric tons of rice, which the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) said on Thursday, Dec. 28, will be distributed to the most needy and poorest sectors in the Philippines. 

MECO chairman Silvestre H. Bello III said the entire donation from the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) is composed of 40,000 sacks of 50-kilogram rice, adding that half of them already arrived in the country last week. 

The other half of the rice stocks, according to Bello, is arriving this week.

“We sincerely appreciate the donation and most grateful to TECO and the government of Taiwan for their generosity. This further strengthens the people-to-people relations of the two countries,” Bello said.

In accepting the donation from TECO Resident Representative to the Philippines Wallace Minn-Gan Chow, Bello said the Taiwan rice will go a long way in providing relief to poor Filipino households and families, and those affected by calamities.

Bello said the donation is intended for use of the Philippine national government for free distribution to the needy and poorest sectors of the Philippine population and for the victims of calamities.

The identification of the beneficiaries and the donation’s distribution will be handled by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Bello said the shipping, insurance and initial delivery costs of the shipments  from Taiwan Port to the Port of Manila are shouldered by TECO.

On the other hand, MECO handled the processing of the import documents and other importation requirements.
