West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. signed an agreement with the JGC Philippines, Inc. – Hitachi Asia, Ltd. Consortium to enhance six Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) located in various parts of Metro Manila.

In a statement, Maynilad said the contract, valued at P998 million, was awarded to JGC-Hitachi for the purpose of improving the STPs in five areas of Quezon City, specifically Bagbag, Congressional, Project 7, and Tatalon.

Furthermore, Maynilad said the upgrade will extend to the STP in Paco, Manila.

According to Maynilad, the enhancement projects are aimed at complying with the revised effluent standards of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

It would also ensure the safety of the treated wastewater and avoid any further contamination.

The contract was signed and delivered by Randolph T. Estrellado, the chief operating officer of Maynilad, Apollo C. Tiglao, the wastewater management head of Maynilad, Hitachi general manager Hiroshi Katagiri, and JGC Philippines President Shinichi Takano.

Meanwhile, Maynilad plans to spend P3 billion to upgrade 17 out of 22 STPs by 2027, or within the next five years.

This is part of the P178 billion wastewater management spending plan from 2023 to 2046.

“The upgrade [of the 17 STPs] would expand sewer coverage and manage pollution loading in bodies of water, thus guaranteeing adherence to legal requirements while enhancing customer service and protecting the environment,” Maynilad said.
