China blames PH anew for maritime conflict

China has declared anew it is the Philippines that is stirring trouble in the region, this time by saying it is Manila's change of policy and position over the South China Sea issue.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, said the responsibility supposedly "lies with the Philippines" as far as the maritime conflict is concerned.

"The recent developments involving China and the Philippines in the South China Sea are caused by the Philippines’ change of policy and position, refusing to honor its commitment, violation of the international law and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, and deliberate infringement of China’s sovereignty and provocations," Mao said.

The Philippines' legitimate operations, including humanitarian and resupply missions, in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) are being seen by China as infringement on its territorial waters as Beijing claims the entirety of the South China Sea, which includes parts of the Philippine waters.

Relations between the Philippines and China are now at a crossroads, China's top diplomat believed, amid various incidences in the waters.

China warned it will "resolutely protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests" in the waters.

In an earlier pronouncement, it also warned it would be compelled under circumstances "to take necessary measures to firmly respond" to supposed provocations in the waters.

Mao said China is hoping the Philippines will make a wise choice, return to the right track of properly handling disputes through dialogue and consultation, and work with China to manage the situation at sea.
